Clyde Emerson
Porter
Oct 17, 1925 — Jun 22, 2024
Charleroi
Clyde Emerson Porter, 98, of Charleroi, died Saturday, June 22, 2024 in his home. He was born on October 17, 1925 to Mina Porter.
Clyde attended Monongahela High School and at the age of sixteen started working at Liggett Spring and Axle Co. as a welder. After being on the job for eighteen months, Clyde answered his call of duty and joined the Army on February 19, 1943.
He proudly served with the 283rd Engineers Combat Battalion, 1st Platoon, 2nd Squad, Company C and was trained at Camp Butner, N.C. The 283rd fought and built bridges for the Allied troops in France, Germany and Belgium where Clyde was wounded and awarded a Purple Heart Medal.
After the war he returned home and married Wilma Jean Frye of Monongahela on February 7, 1948. Always together, they raised their family of Glenda, Judy and Valerie.
Clyde returned to work at Liggett Spring and Axle Co. until a fire closed the site in 1975. After that, he retired to do what he loved - gardening, keeping a beautiful lawn and being with his grandchildren.
In 2019, Clyde renewed his wedding vows with Wilma at their hometown's 250th birthday celebration. When asked why after so many years, he answered, "Because I love her, and I want everyone to know."
Always willing to help those in need and share his wisdom, Clyde was a good friend, a good soldier, a good neighbor. Clyde Porter was a good man.
Although we all knew Clyde as "Pap", when he wrote to his mother Mina Porter, he signed it "Love, Sonny".
We will miss you, Sonny.
Clyde is survived by his wife, Wilma Porter, his three daughters, Glenda (John) Podroskey of Monongahela, Judy (Rodney) Cross of Acme, and Valerie Porter of Monongahela; four grandchildren, Carrie Shoberg, Mary Hazen, Daniel Cross and Scott Orazi; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn A. Porter.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 from 11 AM - 1 PM in the Frye Funeral Home, Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where a funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM with Rev. Kevin Zufall officiating. Interment will follow in the Monongahela Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Monongahela Honor Guard and Firing Squad .
