Clyde Anthony Sutherland, 89, of Monongahela, died Wednesday, December 26, 2018 in the Mon Valley Care Center. He was born June 24, 1929 in Monessen, the son of Joseph and Florence Schuller Sutherland.
Clyde was a graduate of Monongahela High School, class of 1948 and a Korean War veteran having served in the US Army. He retired as a maintenance welder from US Steel Irvin Works in Dravosburg after twenty five years of employment. His memberships include St. Damien of Molokai Church, the Carroll Legion James C. Ford Post 949 of Dunkirk and the Victory Hill Gun Club. Clyde enjoyed trap shooting, woodworking and going to the casinos. Most of all, he loved hunting and fishing at "Camp Monongahela" in Emporium where he was one of the original members.
He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Walters Sutherland with whom he celebrated sixty seven years of marriage on February 24, 2018; two sons, Gery Sutherland and wife Janice, Scott Sutherland and wife Patricia, daughter-in-law, Vicki Sutherland, all of Monongahela; six grandchildren, Gery Sutherland, Jr. and wife Veronica, Heather Popich and husband Andrew, Cory Sutherland, Tracy Benney and husband Aaron, Thomas and Carl Sutherland; eight great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Herbert "Hobie" Koehler of Mount Pleasant; numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Mark Sutherland who died October 6, 2016; brother, Francis Sutherland; and sister, Phyllis Koehler.
Friends will be received on Thursday, December 27, 2018 from 7-9 PM and Friday, December 28, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 10:00 AM in St. Damien of Molokai Church with the Rev. Patrick Barkey as celebrant. Committal services and interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad.
